$5,000 Wedding Budget: What It Covers for 30 Guests, Line by Line

A 5000 wedding budget covers a real wedding for about 30 guests: a rented pavilion or hall, a family-style meal, three hours of photos, simple attire and rings, grocery-store flowers and a buffer, at about $167 a guest. For scale, The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study puts the average US wedding at $34,200 for 117 guests, so $5,000 is about one seventh of average. Below is a line-item plan that sums to exactly $5,000, with the sources for every average. The plan is an example as of October 2026, not financial advice; check prices with your own vendors.

Key takeaways

  • Our example $5,000 plan for 30 guests: $800 venue and rentals, $1,500 food, cake and drinks, $800 photos, $1,000 attire, rings and beauty, $450 flowers, decor and paper, $450 license, officiant, tips and buffer.
  • That is about $167 a guest. The Knot's 2026 average is $292 a guest, Zola's 2026 average total is $36,000.
  • Guest count is the biggest lever: at 50 guests the same plan costs about $1,050 more, almost all of it food, drinks, cake and rentals.
  • The lines that make $5,000 work are the ones you skip: full-service venue, catering staff, open bar, videographer, florist and a DJ.
  • Keep $200 (4 percent) as a buffer. Zola's 2026 survey found 75 percent of couples hit at least one surprise fee.

Where the Averages Come From (and Why $5,000 Is One Seventh of Them)

Two published studies set the scale. The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study surveyed 10,474 US couples married in 2025 and found an average cost of $34,200, an average guest list of 117 and about $292 a guest. Zola's 2026 First Look Report, updated March 6, 2026 from more than 11,500 couples, puts the average at $36,000.

Divide either average by $5,000 and you get about seven. So a $5,000 wedding is not a trimmed version of an average wedding. It is a different shape of day, which is why the plan above skips whole categories instead of shaving each one.

One more number worth knowing: The Knot reports that couples with budgets of $15,000 or less still spent $8,900 on average. A $5,000 wedding sits below the budget bracket, so the plan has to be strict about what it leaves out.

Venue and Rentals: Under $900

Zola's average venue spend of $8,573 is more than this entire budget, so the venue line is where a $5,000 wedding is decided. The $800 in our plan assumes a public space: a park pavilion, a community center room, a library or museum hall, a church hall, or a backyard someone lends you.

Public spaces are priced by the hour or the day by the city or county, and the fee is usually posted online. Ask what comes with the room: many community halls include tables and chairs, which turns the $300 rental line into decor money. If the space is outdoors, the rental line covers chairs and a few tables, and you skip a tent.

Thirty chairs in short rows. In a backyard, the venue line becomes a chair rental and an arch. AI-generated image

Food, Cake and Drinks for 30

Food is the biggest line at $1,500, and it works because nobody is serving it. Drop-off catering from a local restaurant or caterer, set out family style, runs well under full-service catering because there is no staff, no rentals of plates from the caterer and no service charge. Our $35 a head line covers two mains, two sides, salad and bread; a taco or barbecue spread often comes in lower.

The cake line is a small cutting cake plus a sheet cake served from the kitchen, a trick bakeries know well. Drinks are beer, wine and a non-alcoholic option that you buy yourself, which the public-space contract has to allow. Check that rule before you book the room.

Photos for a Small Wedding

Zola's 2026 average photography spend is $4,400, and most of that is hours. A 30 person wedding fits in three: the last 30 minutes of getting ready, the ceremony, family and couple photos, then the first toasts and the cake. The $800 line assumes a newer photographer or a small-wedding package with digital files and no album.

Skip the videographer entirely. If a recording matters to you, ask one guest to film the ceremony and toasts on a phone from a tripod, and put the $0 in writing so nobody expects a highlight film.

Three hours of photos covers the ceremony, family photos and the first toasts at a 30 guest wedding. AI-generated image

Attire, Rings and Beauty

The $1,000 here splits into an off-the-rack dress at $350, a suit at $200, $100 for alterations, $300 for two plain bands and $50 for hair and makeup products used at home. Off the rack means a department store, a bridal sample sale or a secondhand listing, picked up the same day with no order time.

Plain bands in a lower karat or an alternative metal are what keep the ring line at $300 for two. If one of you already has a ring you love, the line drops to $150 and the saving moves straight to the buffer.

Off the rack and ready the same day. Alterations are the line couples forget, so it has its own $100. AI-generated image

Flowers, Decor and Paper

Zola's average for flowers and decor is $6,345. Ours is $350, because there is no florist. Grocery store or wholesale stems go into bud vases for the four tables and one hand-tied bouquet, arranged the morning before by two friends. String lights and candles do the rest, and the public space usually has rules about open flame, so check for battery candles.

Paper is $100: invitations printed at home or at a copy shop on cardstock, one stamp each for 15 to 20 households, and a free wedding website for RSVPs and directions. The wedding budget checklist lists every paper and postage line so none are missed.

Bud vases take six to eight stems each. For four tables that is about two grocery store bunches. AI-generated image

Decor lines in this budget

License, Officiant, Tips and the Buffer

Marriage license fees are set by your state or county and usually posted on the county clerk's site, so the $60 is a placeholder to replace with your own number. The officiant line is $100: a friend ordained online who may need to register with your county, or a budget officiant for a short ceremony. Check your state's rules on who can solemnize a marriage before you ask the friend.

Tips at $90 cover the catering delivery, anyone who helps set up and whoever does hair. The buffer is $200, which is 4 percent of the budget. That is lower than the 8 to 10 percent we suggest in the hidden wedding costs guide, and it only works because this plan has no service charges, no vendor meals and no overtime clauses to surprise you.

What $5,000 Does Not Buy

A $5,000 wedding budget is honest about its gaps. Here are the seven things it leaves out, and the cheaper version of each.

Seven lines a $5,000 wedding budget skips, and the swap for each
Not in the budgetAverage spend (source)The swap in this plan
Wedding venue with staff$8,573 (Zola 2026)Public hall or pavilion with a posted hourly rate
Full-service catering$6,927 (Zola 2026)Drop-off catering, family style, friends clear plates
Open bar$5,542 (Zola 2026)Beer, wine and lemonade you buy yourself, where the space allows it
Videographer$3,993 (Zola 2026)A guest films the ceremony and toasts on a phone
Florist$6,345 flowers and decor (Zola 2026)Grocery stems in bud vases, one hand-tied bouquet
DJ or bandNot in our budgetA playlist, a speaker and one friend in charge of it
Favors, welcome bags and a plannerNot in our budgetSkip all three. Thirty guests get a handwritten thank-you note instead

None of these are failures. They are the trade that makes the day possible now instead of in three years, and our wedding ideas on a budget guide prices more swaps like them.

A self-serve drinks table replaces the open bar. Confirm the space allows alcohol and whether a permit is needed. AI-generated image

If You Have 50 Guests Instead of 30

Twenty more guests add about $1,050 to this plan: $700 of food at $35 a head, $200 more in drinks, $100 in extra chairs and a table, and $50 for a larger sheet cake. Photos, attire, the license and the officiant do not move. That puts the same wedding at about $6,050, or $121 a guest.

To hold $5,000 at 50 guests, you have to cut $1,050 somewhere fixed: a $400 cheaper dress and suit, two hours of photos instead of three (about $250 less), and a backyard instead of a rented hall (up to $500). That is how the math works, and how to cut a wedding guest list explains why most couples choose the shorter list instead.

Fifteen to twenty households means fifteen to twenty stamps. Paper and postage stay under $100 at either guest count. AI-generated image

Track Every Dollar and Due Date

A $5,000 budget has no room for a forgotten deposit. Most of these lines are paid in full close to the day, but the hall, the photographer and the caterer usually take a deposit at booking and the rest two to four weeks out. Write every one down with its due date the day you book.

The Wedding Budget & Payment Planner is built for exactly this: every vendor with its deposit and due date, budget versus actual by category, and a cash-flow view that shows which month gets tight. Use the code PETAL20 at checkout for 20 percent off any Petal & Plan planner.

Frequently asked questions

Can you have a wedding on $5,000?

Yes, for a small guest list in a rented public space with food brought in. Our example plan covers 30 guests at exactly $5,000: $800 venue and rentals, $1,500 food, cake and drinks, $800 photos, $1,000 attire, rings and beauty, $450 flowers, decor and paper, and $450 for the license, officiant, tips and buffer.

How many guests can you have on a $5,000 wedding budget?

About 30 in our plan, at roughly $167 a guest. At The Knot's 2026 average of $292 a guest, $5,000 would cover 17 people, so the lower per-guest cost comes from drop-off catering, a public space and no florist or DJ.

What is a realistic budget for a small wedding?

It depends on the venue type more than the guest count. A 30 guest wedding in a public hall with drop-off catering fits $5,000. The same 30 guests at a wedding venue with full-service catering and a florist usually runs $10,000 to $15,000, and our $10k plan shows that version.

What does the average wedding cost in 2026?

The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study reports $34,200 for an average of 117 guests, about $292 a guest. Zola's 2026 First Look Report puts the average at $36,000. Both figures are as of early 2026.

What does a $5,000 wedding budget leave out?

A wedding venue with staff, full-service catering, an open bar, a videographer, a florist, a DJ or band, and extras like favors and welcome bags. Each has a cheaper swap in the plan above.

How much buffer should a $5,000 wedding budget have?

Our plan holds $200, about 4 percent, which is lower than the 8 to 10 percent we suggest for bigger budgets. It works because this plan has no service charges or overtime clauses. If you book any vendor with a service charge, raise the buffer to at least $400.
