Editorial Guidelines

Wedding planning comes with real money and real feelings. A wrong number here could mean a missed deposit or a budget that runs out two months early. These are the standards every Petal & Plan article has to meet.
Our approach
- Specific beats vague. "Save on flowers" isn't advice. "Use 3 bud vases per table with 2 stems each, about $14 per table as of October 2026" is something you can plan around.
- Every task on the page. Checklists and timelines are written out in full in the article. A download can make them easier to use, but you never need one to read the plan.
- No shame. People spend $3,000 or $30,000 on a wedding for many reasons. None of them make anyone a better or worse couple.
- Realistic expectations. We don't promise that a tip will save a set amount. Your area, season and guest count change the math.
How costs are sourced and dated
We check prices against primary and current sources where they exist:
- Vendor and rental price lists that are published online, such as rental companies, caterers and venues that post their rates
- Retailer prices for supplies like vases, candles, card stock and linens, checked on the date shown
- Published industry cost surveys, such as The Knot and Zola annual studies, named and dated when we use them
- Official sources like county clerk offices for marriage license fees and rules, the USPS for postage, and the IRS where taxes come up
- Venue and vendor guidance on timing, like how long hair and makeup or a photo session usually takes
Every price comes with an "as of" month and year. National averages are labeled as averages, and we say when a cost changes a lot by region. Every price is an example, not a quote. Always confirm with your own vendors before you sign or pay.
Checking the math
Every number in a post is re-checked by a person before it's published.
- Sample budgets add up to their stated total, and the category amounts are shown.
- Cost per guest is shown with the guest count used, so you can redo it with yours.
- Timelines add up minute by minute, with the buffer time listed.
- Supply counts show the per-table or per-guest numbers behind them.
No fake couples or real-wedding claims
We don't publish "real weddings," invented couples, made-up bride quotes or stories presented as our own experience. When a post needs an example, like a $15,000 budget for 80 guests, it is labeled as an example. Our images are concepts, styled scenes or mockups of our templates, never photos of a real couple's wedding. See Images & Copyright.
Wording for every family situation
Invitation, program and speech wording is written to work for the families people really have. That includes divorced and remarried parents, a parent who has passed, stepparents, blended families, same-sex couples, couples hosting their own wedding, and families who are paying in different shares. We use the couple's names and "partner" wording where it fits, and we never assume who is paying. If a situation you need isn't covered, email us and we'll add it.
Product recommendations
When we recommend supplies or services, we look at cost, quantity needed, quality signals in reviews and who the product suits. Recommendations are based on research of public product information, prices and reviews, not hands-on testing unless the post says otherwise. Affiliate commissions don't change our assessment. See our disclosure.
Topics we approach with extra care
We don't give legal, tax or financial advice. Marriage license rules, name changes, prenups and vendor contracts vary by state and situation, so we explain the basics, link the official source and suggest checking with your county clerk or a qualified professional. Money tips about wedding loans or credit cards are general information only.
AI and human review
AI tools may help with research, outlines, drafts and images, as described in our AI policy. A human editor reviews and edits every article before it's published, checks the sources and recalculates every number. The reviewer's name appears on the article.
Updates
Wedding costs move every year. We review our budget and cost posts at least once a year, ahead of the December to February engagement season, and update posts when a price, fee or rule changes. Meaningful updates change the "Updated" date at the top.
Corrections
If you spot an error, email [email protected] with the subject "Correction" and the page link.
- Typos and broken links are fixed quietly.
- Factual or math errors are corrected, with a dated note at the end of the article explaining what changed.
- If an error could cost readers money or a deadline, such as an outdated license fee or waiting period, we fix it first and fastest.
We aim to review every correction request within five business days.
Independence
Petal & Plan is independently owned. No venue, vendor, registry or wedding brand owns us or approves our content. We don't accept payment for positive coverage, sell links or let advertisers review articles before publication. Any sponsored content would be clearly labeled.
These guidelines are reviewed at least once a year. Last updated October 17, 2026.
