Backyard Wedding Tent Cost at a Glance
Two 2026 guides give the clearest numbers. Paperlust's tent guide (July 2026) ties tent size to guest count and gives two prices for each: the tent structure alone, and the all-in cost once delivery, flooring, sides and other extras are added. SuperMoney (February 2026) adds a rougher backyard-wide range. We checked all of them on October 26, 2026. For the rest of the yard, see our backyard wedding cost guide.
| Guests | Tent size | Structure only | All in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 | 20x30 ft | $500 to $900 | $1,500 to $3,500 |
| 75 to 100 | 30x40 ft | $900 to $1,600 | $3,000 to $6,000 |
| 100 to 125 | 30x50 ft | $1,200 to $2,000 | $4,000 to $8,000 |
| 140 to 150 | 40x60 ft | $1,600 to $2,800 | $6,000 to $12,000 |
| 200+ | 40x80 ft | $2,500 to $5,000+ | $10,000 to $25,000+ |
Read across any row and the all-in column is about 3 to 5 times the structure column. That is our arithmetic on Paperlust's figures, not a number it publishes, but it explains why a $900 tent quote can turn into a $3,500 invoice. The 50-guest row is the one most couples need. If that is you, our 50-person wedding cost guide shows where the tent sits in the whole budget.
The sources do not fully agree, so treat every number as a range. SuperMoney puts tent rental at $1,000 to $5,000 with a $2,500 average, but it gives two different totals on the same page and leaves out flooring and heaters. Tent and Table is an older rental-company post (December 2022), so its prices run lower. Rental prices also change by company and region, so use these tables to check a quote, not to replace one.
How Big a Tent Do You Need? The Square-Foot Math
Size comes from one number: square feet per guest. One rental company's 30x60 frame tent listing in Wilmington, NC shows 1,800 square feet for up to 150 seated guests or 225 standing. That works out to 12 square feet per seated guest and 8 per standing guest (our arithmetic). Paperlust's pairings land in the same place at the tight end: 20x30 feet is 600 square feet for 50 guests, or 12 each. Its bigger bands give 12 to 17 square feet per guest, which leaves some room for a dance floor and a buffet.
| Tent size | Square feet | Seated dinner | Standing cocktail | Structure price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10x10 ft | 100 | 8 | 12 | Pop-up canopy, see below |
| 10x20 ft | 200 | 16 | 25 | Two canopies, see below |
| 20x20 ft | 400 | 33 | 50 | $250 to $450 pole, $400 to $650 frame (Tent and Table 2022) |
| 20x30 ft | 600 | 50 | 75 | $500 to $900 (Paperlust 2026) |
| 30x30 ft | 900 | 75 | 112 | Ask your rental company |
| 30x40 ft | 1,200 | 100 | 150 | $900 to $1,600 (Paperlust 2026) |
| 30x60 ft | 1,800 | 150 | 225 | $1,600 to $2,500 frame (Tent and Table 2022); one listing at $1,320 a day |
These counts are tight: seated guests at round tables with no dance floor. Add space for anything else under the roof. Here is a worked example for 60 guests with a dance floor:
60 guests, seated dinner, dance floor
Tent Type and Price: Pole, Frame, Sailcloth, Clear-Span
| Tent type | Structure price | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Pole tent | $900 to $2,500 (Paperlust); 20x20 about $250 to $450 (Tent and Table) | Uses center poles, usually the lowest price per square foot |
| Frame tent | $1,200 to $3,000 (Paperlust); 20x20 about $400 to $650 (Tent and Table) | No center poles, so the whole floor is open |
| Sailcloth tent | $1,500 to $6,000 (Paperlust) | About 40 to 70 percent more than a comparable pole tent |
| Clear-span tent | $4,000 to $15,000+ (Paperlust) | Open span, the highest price here |
Divide those prices by the square feet and a pattern shows. Paperlust's guest-count table works out to about $0.67 to $1.56 per square foot for the structure, and Tent and Table's pole and frame prices to about $0.58 to $1.63 (our arithmetic). So a rough rule for a structure quote is $0.60 to $1.60 per square foot. A quote far above that is probably bundling extras, which is fine if you can see them listed.
Add-Ons That Move the Quote: Floor, Sides, Heat and Power
The add-ons are where a backyard tent budget grows. Here is what the two tent guides list, with the source next to each number.
| Add-on | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Flooring | $400 to $4,000, about $1.50 to $5 per sq ft | Paperlust 2026 |
| Dance floor | $1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft | Tent and Table 2022 |
| Sidewalls | $500 to $1,200, or $1.50 to $3.50 per linear ft | Paperlust 2026; Tent and Table 2022 |
| Heaters | $175 to $450+ each plus fuel, or $150 to $350 each | Paperlust 2026; Tent and Table 2022 |
| Generator | $450 to $1,400 | Paperlust 2026 |
| Local delivery | $75 to $200 flat within about 25 miles | Tent and Table 2022 |
| After-hours teardown | $200 to $500 | Tent and Table 2022 |
| Ballast on hard surfaces | $150 to $500 | Tent and Table 2022 |
| Permit and insurance | $50 to $350 permit (Tent and Table); $100 to $1,000 with insurance (SuperMoney) | Tent and Table 2022; SuperMoney 2026 |
Neither tent guide prices lighting. Our backyard wedding cost guide cites $400 to $2,000 for backyard lighting from Paperlust, and string lights alone are a small share of that. For the fees that arrive after the contract is signed, see the hidden wedding costs and payment schedule.
8 add-ons to ask about in every tent quote
A word on safety: this page gives costs, not engineering or fire advice. Ask the rental company which heaters and lights are approved for its tent, who installs them, and whether it can show a fire-retardant certificate for the tent fabric, since local fire rules vary. Follow the rental company's and manufacturer's instructions for anything with a flame or a power cord.
Worked Example: Tent Budget for 60 Guests With a Dance Floor
| Line | Low | High | Where the range comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame tent, 30x40 ft | $900 | $1,600 | Paperlust 2026, 30x40 band |
| Delivery, setup and strike | $800 | $3,000 | Paperlust backyard guide range, as cited in our backyard wedding cost guide |
| 12x12 dance floor (144 sq ft) | $216 | $504 | $1.50 to $3.50 per sq ft, Tent and Table 2022 |
| Sidewalls | $500 | $1,200 | Paperlust 2026 |
| Two heaters | $350 | $900 | $175 to $450 each, Paperlust 2026; fuel extra |
| Permit | $50 | $350 | Tent and Table 2022 |
| Total, core tent costs | $2,816 | $7,554 | Sum of the lines above |
| Optional generator | $450 | $1,400 | Paperlust 2026 |
That is $2,816 to $7,554, or about $47 to $126 per guest, plus $450 to $1,400 if the tent needs its own generator. Paperlust's all-in band for 75 to 100 guests is $3,000 to $6,000, so our high end sits above it because it counts sidewalls and heaters, which a warm, dry day may not need. Rain Plan: What to Price Before the Forecast Does
A tent is a rain plan only if the sides, the floor and the water path are planned too. The cost lines are the sidewalls in the table above, a floor if the lawn is soft, and a late teardown if guests stay past the crew's hours ($200 to $500 at Tent and Table in 2022). Neither tent guide gives a rain-day cost, so these are the parts you can price.
5 questions to ask your rental company about rain
Permits and Insurance: Check the Size Threshold
Many cities and counties require a permit above a certain tent size, and the threshold and fee depend on where you live. Tent and Table says permits typically start above 400 or 900 square feet; Paperlust gives no fee. Call your city or county office with your tent size before you book, and ask whether your homeowner's policy covers a tent event or you need a one-day policy.
Renting Your Home? No-Stake and No-Drill Tent Options
Renters can still have a tent. The question is how it stays down. Stakes go into the lawn, and a landlord may object to holes, sprinkler lines or buried utilities. Get written permission, and call 811, the national call-before-you-dig line, before anything is staked. If you are not sure who owns the yard, our backyard wedding checklist also covers confirming with a landlord or HOA in writing.
| Anchor | Works on | Cost | Renter note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stakes | Lawn and soil | Usually part of the setup | Needs landlord permission; call 811 first |
| Ballast weights | Patio, deck, driveway or lawn | $150 to $500 for ballast handling on hard surfaces | No holes; ask the crew to place weights, not drill |
| Weight bags on a pop-up canopy | Patio or lawn | Buy a set, see the list below | No holes; follow the canopy maker's weight guidance |
Micro and Tiny Tent Options for 10 to 30 Guests
A micro wedding can skip the rental company. On the 12 square feet per seated guest rule, a 10x10 canopy seats about 8, and two side by side (10x20) seat about 16. A rented 20x20 pole tent ($250 to $450 at Tent and Table in 2022) seats about 33. Buying is different from renting: Pinterest shopping results on October 26, 2026 showed buy-it tents from $151 to $1,539, with size and build driving the price, and our backyard wedding cost guide lists a basic 10x10 pop-up at $60 to $120. Two basic canopies cost $120 to $240 to buy, compared with $250 to $650 for a rented 20x20 structure alone before delivery.
Cheap canopies are made for shade, not for wind. Weigh the legs, follow the maker's instructions and take it down if a gust is forecast. For a low-risk trial, host a backyard engagement party under the same canopy and see where the water runs.
What we like
- Buying two canopies can cost less than a rented 20x20 structure alone.
- No delivery or setup crew, and no ballast handling fee.
- You can reuse them after the wedding.
- They fit a small yard or a patio.
Keep in mind
- They hold fewer guests, about 8 per 10x10.
- They are light, so wind is a real risk.
- You do the setup, the weights and the teardown.
- Sidewalls and a dance floor are not part of the deal.

Compare each tent quote the way you would compare venues. Our questions to ask a wedding venue list works for rental companies too, especially the lines about deposits, cancellation and what happens in bad weather.
If you also need the guest list and the day timeline, the Wedding Planning Core Trio bundles the budget planner with both. Code PETAL20 works there as well.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a tent for a backyard wedding cost?
For about 50 guests, Paperlust's July 2026 guide puts a 20x30 tent at $500 to $900 for the structure and $1,500 to $3,500 all in. For 200+ guests the all-in range is $10,000 to $25,000+. Prices vary by company and region.
How big a tent do I need for 100 guests?
On 12 square feet per seated guest, 100 guests need about 1,200 square feet, which is a 30x40 ft tent. Paperlust pairs 30x40 with 75 to 100 guests and 30x50 with 100 to 125. Add space for a dance floor, bar or buffet.
How many square feet per guest for a wedding tent?
About 12 square feet per seated guest and 8 per standing guest. A 30x60 ft tent listing shows 1,800 square feet for up to 150 seated or 225 standing, which matches. Add a dance floor and buffet on top.
Do I need a permit for a backyard wedding tent?
Often, above a size threshold that varies by city. Tent and Table says permits typically apply above 400 or 900 square feet and cost $50 to $350. Call your city or county office with your tent size before you book.
Can renters put up a wedding tent?
Yes, with the landlord's written permission. Use weights instead of stakes on patios and decks (ballast handling costs $150 to $500 at Tent and Table), and call 811 before staking a lawn.
Is a clear tent more expensive?
Yes. Paperlust lists clear-span tents at $4,000 to $15,000+ for the structure, against $900 to $2,500 for a pole tent and $1,200 to $3,000 for a frame tent. Clear sidewalls on a standard tent cost less.
